How to Take Care of Your Gemstone Jewellery

Gemstone jewellery can remain beautiful for many years when treated with a little care. Because gemstones vary in hardness and sensitivity, the safest approach is to handle every piece gently.

Keep It Away from Chemicals

Remove your jewellery before using household cleaners, perfume, hairspray, moisturiser or beauty products. Chemicals can dull gemstones and damage precious-metal settings.

A useful rule is to put your jewellery on last when getting ready and take it off first when you return home.

Remove Jewellery for Certain Activities

Take gemstone jewellery off before:

  • Showering, bathing or swimming
  • Gardening or cleaning
  • Exercising
  • Sleeping
  • Applying creams or perfumes

Chlorine and salt water may damage metals and some gemstones. Wearing jewellery during physical activities can also loosen settings or cause fine chains to break.

Clean It Gently

For many gemstone pieces, use a soft, slightly damp cloth to remove oils and everyday dirt. If your jewellery needs a deeper clean, use lukewarm water with a small amount of mild soap and a very soft brush.

Rinse carefully and dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. Never use boiling water or harsh cleaning products.

Pearls, opals, turquoise, moonstone and other delicate or porous gemstones require particular care. Avoid soaking them, and do not use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner unless a professional jeweller has confirmed that it is safe.

Store Pieces Separately

Gemstones and metals can scratch one another when stored together. Keep each piece in a separate soft pouch or a lined jewellery box.

Fasten necklaces before storing them and lay fine chains flat to help prevent knots and tangles. Pearls should be kept away from very dry conditions and stored where they will not rub against harder gemstones.

Protect Jewellery from Heat and Sunlight

Prolonged exposure to strong sunlight or heat can alter the colour of certain gemstones. Store your jewellery in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, radiators and damp bathrooms.

Check the Settings

Inspect your jewellery occasionally, especially rings, bracelets and pieces worn frequently. If a gemstone feels loose or you notice a damaged clasp or bent setting, stop wearing the piece and take it to a professional jeweller.

It is also sensible to have valuable or much-loved jewellery professionally inspected and cleaned from time to time.

Give Your Jewellery the Care It Deserves

Gemstone jewellery is designed to be enjoyed. With gentle cleaning, thoughtful storage and protection from chemicals and knocks, your favourite pieces can retain their beauty and sparkle for many years.
