Why Tanzanite Is So Rare and Valuable

Tanzanite is rare because it is found in only one small area of the world—near Mount Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania.

It formed under an unusually precise combination of heat, pressure and minerals millions of years ago. These conditions are so exceptional that geologists believe they are unlikely to occur anywhere else.

The known mining area is only a few kilometres across, so the supply is limited. Once the deposit is exhausted, no other commercial source is currently known. Fine stones with a strong blue-violet colour, good clarity and larger size are particularly rare—and therefore more valuable.

Most tanzanite is naturally brownish when mined and is safely heat-treated to reveal its beautiful blue and violet colours.
