Beautiful Aquamarine Birthstones for March

Colours

Aquamarine is most often light in tone and ranges from greenish blue to blue-green; the color is usually more intense in larger stones.

Meanings

The name aquamarine is derived from the Latin word aqua, meaning water, and marina, meaning the sea.  Aquamarine was believed to protect sailors, as well as to guarantee a safe voyage. The beautiful blue color of aquamarine is said to give its wearer protection against foes in battle or litigation. It also brings the wearer unconquerable and amiable powers. It quickens the intellect and dulls a temper, allowing the wearer to remain calm and levelheaded. March’s birthstone is also thought to enhance the happiness of marriages.

As well as being the birthstone for March Aquamarine is also the gem of the 19th wedding anniversary.

  What is Aquamarine

Aquamarine is a variety of beryl and is mined mainly in Brazil, but is also found in Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Pakistan, Mozambique, Colombia, Malawi, Tanzania and Kenya. The best gems combine high clarity with limpid transparency and blue to slightly greenish blue hues.

The central gemstone in the Queen’s Brazilian tiara is an Aquamarine, which was gifted to her by the Brazilian people in 1953 and was worn at her 60th Coronation Anniversary in 2013.

A Guide to Choosing the Best Earrings For Your Face Shape

Choosing earrings for your face shape

There are 6 main face shapes, oval, long, round, square, heart and diamond and the first step is to decide which one you are.

To do this, pull your hair back and look at the shape of the side of your face. Does your face widen at your ears? Oval, round, heart or diamond shapes do.

Does the side of your face continue in a more or less flat plane? Long faces do. Does your chin have a distinct point? Long, heart and oval faces do. Does your lower jaw have a smooth continuous line without an obvious chin point? Round and square faces do.

Sometimes it helps to take a photo of your face with your hair up and look at it to help you decide.

Wearing the correct earring shape can be very flattering and can help to accentuate and bring your best features to the fore and take attention away from your not so great ones. For example if you have a full face and would like to create a slimmer look the correct earrings can do just that. If you have a long thin face the correct earrings will help to give a fuller more open look.

Follow these tips for a great look:

Oval face

Garnet Chandelier Earrings Arts and Crafts Style Amethyst and Sterling Silver Earrings

Wear long, dangle, drop or chandelier earrings that are thinner at the top and widen as they get longer. This shape helps to fill out the lower area of your face and give an elegant look. See earrings to suit oval face shape>

Long shaped face

Large Silver and Blue Cubic Zirconia Flower Petal Stud Earrings White Pearl and Sterling Silver Drop Earrings with CZ Gemstones

Wear studs or short drops. This will give the illusion of a wider face and highlight your eyes. Choose colours that match your eyes. See earrings to suit long face shape>

Round face

Lapis Lazuli & 925 Sterling Silver Long Drop Earring

Here you want to elongate your face by wearing long, dangle, drop or chandelier earrings. Earrings that begin with a thin line and elongate and have a larger interesting area at the bottom are ideal for this shape. Round faces shouldn’t wear disc earrings as this accentuates the roundness of the face too much. Rather, choose geometric designs and as long as you like. See earrings to suit round face shape>

Square face

Silver and Aquamarine Blue Cubic Zirconia and Pearl Drop Earrings Blue-Green Aqua Chalcedony and Sterling Silver Earrings

Studs, mid-length drops & long slim elegant shapes are best for this face shape. Earrings that are not too solid are better - for example chose earrings with many small stones rather than those with one large shape or stone. See earrings to suit square face shape>

Heart shaped face

Long, dangle drops and chandeliers that end at or above the chin would suit this face shape. This earring shape helps to focus on and widen the mouth area. See earrings to suit heart shape face>

Diamond shaped face

Long and elegant drops that fall gently, an example would be a multi stone drop earring. This earring shape will help to fill the area around the lower jaw and draw attention to the mouth. Earrings to suit diamond shape face>

If you need any more help or can’t decide which style of earrings bests suits you just send us your photo (admin@frankibaker.co.uk) and I would be very pleased to make our suggestions.

Hope this helps!

Turquoise & Tanzanite- The Birthstones of December

December birthdays have two birthstones, Tanzanite & Turquoise, which have one thing in common….they come in shades of blue. Turquoise also comes in a beautiful blue/green colour too.

Turquoise is thought to have the longest history as a gemstone used in jewellery. The pharaohs and other rulers of ancient Egypt adorned themselves with it. Chinese artisans carved it more than 3,000 years ago. Today's turquoise comes mainly from Iran, New Mexico and China.

Turquoise is believed to possess many beneficial powers, like bringing health and good fortune. From the 13th century on, it was believed that turquoise would protect the wearer from falling (especially off horses), and would break into several pieces at the approach of disaster. Hindu mystics maintained that seeing a turquoise after beholding the new moon ensured fantastic wealth.

Tanzanite is a relative newcomer to the world of coloured gemstones, but it was one of the most exciting gem discoveries of the 20th century. Blue stones mined in Tanzania were identified as the mineral zoisite in 1962 but not until 1967 did prospectors locate the primary source for this December birthstone in the Merelani Hills of Tanzania. Tiffany & Co. became its main distributor and in 1968 Tanzanite quickly became a sensation and today it is not only a December birthstone, but it is also the gem for the 24th wedding anniversary.

Garnet - The birthstone for January

The word Garnet comes from the Latin word Garanatus, meaning seed like. The beautiful rich red colour of these gems was thought to resemble the seeds of the pomegranate.
